Two other terms, those of marginalization and the “other”, are to be considered in this context together with further elaborations which have added to the understanding and use of the terminology to be discussed.ģ It should be noted that solitude itself together with its synonyms, isolation and seclusion, evokes different degrees of separation. The terminology of solitudeĢ Before further examining the tortuous and troubled relationship the son – François – has with others, it is useful to examine certain concepts linked directly to that of “solitude”. The minimal contact she allows her son with that society is intended to further his development and eventual career into the priesthood from which point she will presumably be able to complete her vengeance on society. In isolating herself and her son, she intends to take vengeance on that same society. This solitude is a negative force impacting on his development and eventual suicide while solitude was, for his mother, a positive reaction to a society which had presumably condemned her for the child she had out of wedlock. In this case the “child” lives alone separated from others and from society in general, represented by the village or town from which his mother came.
